first 4 new songs
Last Saturday I did a pretty good 'JB Final' Mix for the song "Right as Rain" It was the result of 3 interesting days of mixing ;) Like the 3 songs before, it was very much a situation where i took my time, enjoyed the process, and tried to stay in the moment while doing it...
And this being the 4th song, it's now time to start figuring out how this album might be rolled out. That is, how should I make these new songs available (if at all) while the album is in progress? Right now, judging by the current pace, I won't be done with all 12 songs until this October. At this point, that seems pretty far away.
So, should I keep all the songs to myself until the point where they're all released? Or, should I find a way to let people hear these in-progress versions (which may end up being the final versions) beforehand? Obviously, I'm leaning toward the latter...
One way I could see it happening is to make this music available as EPs. For this album, there will be 12 songs overall: 10 album tracks and 2 B-sides. Assuming each EP has 5 songs each, that would make 2 EP releases. It sounds simple enough, but there are other things to consider...
Part of it is that I don't think a cohesive album like this can be fully understood (or analyzed) until all the songs are done. Naturally, I may need to make some changes after hearing it all together... And then there is the issue of mastering. I'd prefer to do it all at the same time, for the overall sonic cohesiveness (rather than go 5-6 songs at a time with months between sessions).
Considering all this, I probably won't break the album into EPs first. And I'll most likely keep the rest of the songs to myself until everything is done. But I *am* pretty stoked about what I have so far :)
